My new classes for this semester are as follows: 3rd Hour - Art 8 4th Hour - Visual Arts (Seniors) 5th Hour - Drawing & Painting 6th Hour - Art 6 All classes started the semester by creating digital portfolios, sketchbooks, and portfolios to hold work through the course of the class. After that, all classes completed a color theory review. Once the color wheel was reviewed, classes were assigned their first projects. Art 8 - Radial Name Designs Visual Arts - 12 Section Color Wheel Mandalas Drawing & Painting - 6 Section Color Wheel Mandalas Art 7 - Radial Name Designs This project was great color theory review, along with paint mixing practice. I finally have a chance to make a post to update what we have been up to in the Art room! A new Trimester started recently, and we're underway with new projects and new students. My 3 new classes are 1. Drawing & Painting 2. Art History 3. Art 8 along with my usual elementary hour in the afternoon of course. Here is what we've been doing: Drawing/Painting reviewed the color wheel, and completed a Geometric Silhouette project that was a new one for me. After deciding what to use as their silhouette (animal, etc) they created an outline using mainly straight lines. After that, lines were drawn INSIDE the object and filled in using a specific color scheme that was reviewed (complementary, analgous, etc). After painting that, the background had to completed as well, but in a contrasting way. The results are great! I've received many compliments on them! Click on the images below to enlarge. Drawing/Painting students are now working on an Agamograph project - results will be posted soon! My Art History class is a nice small group that is really great to work with. We started our learning with Pre-Historic art including Cave Paintings of Lascaux, Stonehenge, Egyptian Art, and most recently, Greek & Roman Art. They completed cave paintings in small groups, along with a simple Egyptian Profile. Up next are Greek Vases, and a test over our first unit! My final class at the Junior/High School is Art 8. They began the Trimester with a color theory challenge, creating the color wheels below from prior knowledge. After working in a small group, they were assigned a "creative color wheel" project to take a new spin on the traditional circular format. Click on the image to enlarge. Up next, they are reviewing the Elements of Art by creating Camouflage Paintings that display all of the elements using a winter/holiday theme. Camouflage paintings are inspired by artist Guido Daniele, who is famous for body painting, and specifically realistic hand paintings. When their paintings are completed, they must hide two painted hands in a photograph taken by their group. See examples from last year HERE. Pictured below is one example (can you find the hands?) and the current works in progress. Only one more week to go until Winter Break! Happy Holidays to all!
My 2nd hour class is now Drawing/Painting. Their first project was a simple Monochromatic Landscape painting. This was a good chance for some Color Theory, paint mixing 101 and basic brush control. Monochromatic is using one HUE from the Color Wheel (Blue, for example) mixed with Black, White, or Grey. White = Tint Grey = Tone Black = Shade Up next, students are working on Spirit Animal illustrations based on the current artist Romero Britto. Romero Britto is a Brazilian Pop artist that has work all over the world. He is the official ambassador for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and had work in Super Bowl halftime shows, US stamps, and in the 2010 World Cup. Students are also required to write a brief artist statement explaining why they chose their particular Spirit Animal. Students in my Intro to Art classes completed their Analogous Circle projects. Analogous colors are hues that are neighboring on the color wheel. The results look great hung up in the Art room! Up next, they are working on a Mixed Media Self-Portrait that is DUE TODAY! After those projects are turned in, we are reviewing our Elements and Principles of Art! Check back soon! Color Theory Portraits and starting Tint/Shade paintings. The color theory portrait was a project to exercise the class knowledge of the color wheel by creating a portrait of someone else and using warm colors and cool colors in two medias. -Rikki I'm excited for this project because I get to use tints and shades like a pro. Contrary to popular belief, I LOVE shading and tinting and I'm so looking forward to this. Silhouettes play a large role in this project as well and I am really feeling good about this! -Brandon Schultz This week, in our third hour art class we designed a color wheel, shoes, and an oil pastel masterpeice that included the different elements of the color wheel! For the shoe project, the design had to only use one of the color schemes we learned from our color wheel. The oil pastel project was a simple picture divided into six sections, each of which had a different color scheme, such as primary, secondary, complimentary, monochromatic, warm or cool, and analogous. We should have a test on the color wheel at the end of the week (if there isn't a snow day!) This week in art we made shoe designs. We had to do the design and color it with either primary, secondary, complementary, or analogous colors. We also had to make oil pastel pictures using primary, sencondary, complementary, monochromatic, warm or cool, and analogous colors. We had to break the picture into six sections. These two projects had to deal with the color wheel, and how well we understood it. In high school art classes this week, students created Monochromatic Paintings. Monochromatic is another word for using mainly ONE color in your work. They were required to choose one color and design a painting of their choice. To create dimension, white, black and gray paint could be added to the base color that was chosen. These additions could change the shade, tint or tone of the initial color. The results definitely impressed me! Check them out :) Trivet ProjectThis week in second hour, our job was to make a clay trivet. A trivit is similar to a hot plate that you might set a warm pot or pan on to not wreck the table. They were supposed to be 6 inches in diameter and include some type of coil. Once we have sculpted our tivets we have to let them dry completely and then glaze them to add color. What I liked about this project was how we could make any design on our trivits. Art II students (1st Hour) created these lovely Tint Tree Silhouettes. The paintings were completed with masking tape, and tempera paint. Through this project, students were learning basics of the color wheel - in this case, tint (when white is added to change a color). It was also a good test of their craftsmanship, and attention to detail. I am really happy with the results! Enjoy :) Up next for 1st Hour - Post-It murals as a group project! |
